In February of 2010 Derrick began a new body of work called "The Fortitude Masks". 

To create a "Fortitude Mask" Derrick interviews everyday people about an experience or event that "made them stronger". He asks his models about their personal symbols and beliefs about "strength".  Derrick then creates a body painting and a backdrop for that individual, illustrating their unique story. He paints the design on the participant and photographs them with their backdrop.
